Intervention to Telehealth and Text to Improve Engagement in Care (i2TEC) is an evidence-informed intervention with the goal of improving HIV care engagement and viral suppression among people with HIV who are not consistently in care. i2TEC leverages technology to address mental health and substance use challenges as well as other personal barriers to care engagement. Designed as a short-term intervention, i2TEC works by increasing the readiness of people to resume consistent routine HIV care.
Clients of i2TEC participate in 12 brief telehealth counseling sessions based on a biopsychosocial assessment and tailored to the client’s needs and interests. The sessions combine psychoeducation, health education, motivational interviewing, and problem-solving therapy. Between sessions, clients and counselors engage in text messaging consisting of appointment reminders, goal check-ins, session rating questions, and the sharing of relevant resources.
